Review of the film "Love and Friendship" (2016)

Before the premiere, I bought a book with the novel of the same name by Jane Austen (or is it still Austen?), read it carefully in an attempt to memorize the characteristics of the characters in order to compare them with the filmed prototypes. But... the director took only the title from that book. The name of the main character, Susan, and the time period (1790s) randomly match. Perhaps Jane, under the name Susan, saw a collective image of a cunning scheming schemer as a teenager (and she deliberately named Lord Manwaring that way, because "Mannering" is clearly heard in English). That's it, nothing else in common. In our case, another novel by the author (Lady Susan) was filmed.

The film is hardly worth watching for anti-fans of the often mawkish numerous film adaptations of the British woman's works, such as "Emma" and "Pride and Prejudice." Although he doesn't quite fit into that canvas of calm naive film adaptations. Perhaps the reason is the director, 64-year-old independent filmmaker Whit Stillman. It's not very often that he pleases the viewer with his creations.

To better prepare for "Love & Friendship", you can watch his film "The Last Days of Disco" (1998). Kate Beckinsale and Sevigny, who are 18 years younger here, are also starring! Kate starred in a decent movie about 2.5 years ago. Her American friend (not only on screen) with a French surname is finally moving away from the stormy serial activity. Englishwoman Beckinsale has already played in the adaptation of Austen, and for her current role she managed to win the best Actress award at the Seattle Film Festival. She's been one of my top 20 favorite actresses for a long time. The actress plays at her best level. By the way, actors are mostly older than their 30-year-old literary prototypes.

The film, declared primarily as a drama-melodrama, after viewing clearly suggests the genre of "costumed melodramatic comedy." And although 5 different countries are involved in the production, there is still enough specific English humor here. The translators have tried their best, however, it is advisable to watch in the original.

Classical music lovers who sometimes go to such paintings for the opportunity to enjoy music from 200-300 years ago will not be disappointed. How else can you enhance your movement in that era?. There are excerpts from all of Stillman's previous tapes here.

After watching it, it will be interesting to observe in the near future the career development of two (many) promising actresses: theatrical Welshwoman Morfydd Clarke (in the role of Catherine's niece Frederica) and actually 27-year-old American Emma Greenville (played here by Catherine Vernon).

Some individual points:

1. 1790s - the St. George Era (~ 1714-1830). The era of the reign of kings named George. Enlightenment, regency, industrial revolution, expansion of England's possessions.

2. The novel "Love and Friendship", which is unrelated to this film, written by the author at the age of 14.

3. The novel "Lady Susan" was written at the age of 19, rewritten at 30, and published 54 years after Jane Austen's death.

4. Maybe Stephen Fry suddenly has supporters among the readers - he is here in two episodes.
